The Pandemic's Effect on Fair Trade Businesses

These past couple of years have been hard on everybody. Tumultuous. Difficult. Whatever word you may use. But in the midst of recalling the anxiety and uncertainty we suddenly found ourselves facing around this exact time two years ago, we seem to forget that those who depend on fair-trade businesses such as Elevāt have had a significant amount of struggle making their living. During the course of the pandemic, the lives of many women were upended due to the disruption that happened to the fair-trade industry. They suddenly experienced an extreme shortage of supplies they normally use to craft their products, which threatened their income and stability. According to Borgen Magazine, as many as 2/3 of fair-trade artisans experienced a drop in demand during the COVID-19 pandemic.

As people start to come back into their “normal,” day-to-day lives, there seems to be hope on the horizon. Supply chains are back up and running, artisans are able to make a living off their products. Many of our talented artisans are also mothers, and having the guarantee of stable income also assures them that their children wil be adequately provided for. Your support of Elevāt gives them not only a sense of stability but instills in them a hope for a brighter future.
